If you’re looking for a book club that has truly meaningful connections instead of being distracted by chit chat, choosing a book club theme can make all the difference. Themed reading isn’t just a fun twist, it’s a powerful way to help focus your conversations, discover new genres, and invite members to share more personally. Whether you’re part of a long-running group or just getting started, a thoughtful theme can turn any book into a doorway for deeper literary conversations.

In one of my book clubs (yes, I’m in three—no regrets!), my husband and I read with another couple we’re close friends with. We take turns picking books around a shared theme, and it’s led to some of the most meaningful conversations we’ve ever had. So far, we’ve picked books based on these themes:

  • The book you recommend the most

  • A book you wish you could read again for the first time

  • Choose an author you’ve always wanted to read (and let everyone pick a different title)

These simple reading ideas opened the door to unexpected conversations and deeper connection. And that’s exactly what we aim for inside the Literary Moms’ Book Club, too.

Why Book Club Themes Work

In the Literary Moms’ Book Club, we don’t just choose books at random—we read with intention. Our club follows a yearlong theme to guide both our book recommendations and our discussions.

This year’s theme is “The Year of Calling,” and it’s helped us reflect on who we are as women. We have many roles like wife, mom, employee, friend, and church member. Our conversations, in light of the book, focus on how we live with purpose in each of those roles.

Each quarter, we explore a different aspect of that calling:

  • Last quarter, we focused on Seasons of Growth, recognizing that no matter our age or stage, we’re still meant to grow and learn.

  • This quarter, our theme is The Paths We Take. We’re asking how our decisions shape our lives and calling.

Our current book club theme has led us to some truly rich reads:

These books don’t just entertain—they inspire reflection, conversation, and connection.

The Benefits of Choosing Book Club Themes

Whether you’re leading a new group or looking to bring life into a long-running one, here are just a few reasons to consider using book club themes:

1. Promotes Diversity in Reading

Choosing a monthly or quarterly theme pushes your group to try new voices, genres, and styles. From historical fiction to memoir, fantasy to faith-based titles. Thoughtful themes encourage everyone to try something new.

2. Meaningful Book Discussions

Themes naturally invite readers to reflect more deeply on the story. When everyone’s reading a book that connects to a bigger idea (like calling, courage, or identity) you’ll find that the conversations go beyond “did you like it?” and into the heart of why the book matters.

3. Builds Stronger Bonds

Themed reading makes it easier to share personal stories, favorite quotes, and emotional takeaways. Whether you’re talking about the book that changed your mind or the novel that shaped your childhood, these book discussions help members connect on a deeper level.

One of the questions we use in The Discussion Framework to invite personal connections is, “Does anything remind us that we are not alone?” I love this question because it’s asking where we see our own story or experience in the book we just read.

Popular Book Club Themes to Try

If your group is ready to explore fresh ideas, here are some of my favorite book club themes that easily lead to meaningful conversations:

Classics Revisited

Rediscover timeless literature that continues to resonate. These make great anchor reads for thoughtful literary conversations:

Author Spotlights

Choose one author, and let each member pick a different book by them. Compare styles, themes, and evolution.
Great for:

Books to Screen

Read the book, then plan a movie night to compare adaptations. It’s a fun way to see how story and character translate to film:

Seasonal Book Club Themes

Let the time of year inspire your reading! These book club themes make it easy to match your mood to the page.

Summer Escapes

I wrote a full blog list of my favorite “Beach Reads for Moms Who are Well-Read” that you should check out. But here are some additional fun, fast-paced, or heartwarming reads for a light seasonal touch:

Cozy Winter Reads

Perfect for evenings by the fire (or under a blanket):

Stretch Your Reading With These Book Club Themes

Looking to challenge your group’s with thought-provoking literature? These reading ideas are designed to get you out of your comfort zone:

  • Read Outside Your Genre – Try something no one usually picks: poetry, sci-fi, nonfiction, or a short story collection.

  • The Book That Changed Your Mind – Great for reflecting on growth and change.

  • Birth Year Books – Everyone reads a book published the year they were born, then discuss what it says about that moment in time. This works best if your book club spans a few decades.

Add Some Fun to Your Book Discussions

Book club doesn’t have to be all serious lit chat. Here are a few bonus ideas to make it extra memorable:

  • Themed snacks – Serve food tied to the setting or plot. Mediterranean for Greek novels? Scones for British lit?

  • Guest speakers – Invite a local author or expert to join your discussion and share behind-the-scenes insight.
