Adventure & Outdoorsy Reads
- The Little Island by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Leonard Weisgard — Caldecott winner with gorgeous art; captures the wonder of nature and seasons.
- Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall — stunning illustrations, lyrical text, about the rhythm of the sea and a lighthouse keeper’s life. This book has been on the display shelf above my son’s bed all summer. We’ve enjoyed it a lot!
- See Inside Oceans by Emily Bone – a lift-the-flap book about an array of plants and animals under the ocean.
- The Raft by Jim LaMarche — lovely illustrations, boy discovers nature and creativity during a summer at the river. I loved reading this one to my students!
Skateboard/Surf Vibes
- High Tide in Hawaii (Magic Tree House series) by Mary Pope Osborne – I just started reading this series with my five year old and he really loves it! The books don’t need to be read in order, so this would be a good one to start with since it’s about surfing.
- Surf’s Up by Kwame Alexander — two frogs heading to the beach, playful and rhythmic, with a fun nod to the power of reading.
- I Like Sports: What Jobs are There? by Steve Martin – for children who have a passion for sports, but don’t know how they can turn it into a job. Many creative ideas that are sports-related but not “being an athlete.”
- Who is Tony Hawk? by Kort
- Hang Ten! Surfing (TIME FOR KIDS) by Christine Dugan – Nonfiction with vibrant images, covers history of surfing, culture, equipment. My students always enjoyed looking at these pictures.
- The Life-Changing Magic of Skateboarding: A Beginner’s Guide with Olympic Medalist Sky Brown – Inspiring role model, beautiful illustrations, gives practical tips + the “how it feels” side of skateboarding.
- My Skateboard Book by Roberto Diaz – Colorful, action-filled, fun/slight nonfiction, covers safety, history, enjoyment of skateboarding.
You might also consider looking into a magazine subscription about surfing or skateboarding. Seeing living pictures would be really exciting and inspiring!
