If you’re shopping for kids reading gifts this year, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite ways to make reading feel extra special. These ideas go beyond just giving a book — they help your child create a space where stories come alive, imagination grows, and quiet reading time feels like an adventure.

Reading Nook Must-Haves
Every little reader needs a cozy corner that feels like their own personal story world. Start with a soft floor cushion or beanbag chair and add a cozy blanket to snuggle up with. A clip-on reading light or string lights make the space feel magical once the sun goes down. I also love using a personalized bookshelf to keep their favorite books close by — bonus points if you include a fun series starter set like The Green Ember or Mercy Watson.
Kids Reading Gifts for Creative Play & Stories

One of my favorite things about kids reading gifts is how stories can inspire creativity! Bring books to life with a LEGO kit that matches a favorite story like A Christmas Carol, Harry Potter, or Orchard House from Little Women. Or share a puppet set that lets them act out their own tales. (I also love these fairy tale shadow puppets!) A dress-up outfit based on a beloved book character always sparks imaginative play, and an art set paired with a how-to-draw book (like PaperPie’s Big Drawing Book) helps them create their own illustrations and stories.

Tech for Little Readers

Not all tech time has to mean screen time. The Yoto Player is such a fun way for kids to listen to stories on their own — especially with those cute, collectible story cards. (Read my full review of the Yoto Player: A Busy Moms’ Secret Weapon.) For independent readers, the Kindle Kids (Colorsoft) is a great choice, giving them easy access to books anywhere. Add in a set of headphones for audiobooks and maybe a reading timer to make daily reading time feel extra fun and self-directed.
Learning Through Play
Some of the best kids reading gifts are the ones that mix learning and laughter. Think classic board games like Guess Who? or Scrabble Jr., or an origami kit for some hands-on creativity. You could also try a STEM set (including SMARTLab Toy’s Tiny Kits) or a puzzle that also includes a book. These are perfect options for quiet afternoons or family game nights that sneak in a bit of reading practice.
Kids Reading Gifts for Playtime & Pretend
Storytelling doesn’t have to stop when the book closes! Encourage open-ended play with the Little People Barbie Dreamhouse. My daughter has played with hers almost every day for two years! Pair it with dollhouse characters from your favorite book that invite storytelling or even tiny books to add to the shelves. You can even create a storybook-themed sensory bin for hands-on, imaginative fun.
I hope these kids’ reading gift ideas help to inspire a love of reading in your home. Don’t forget, the best way to build a reading culture is to be a reader yourself!
